I love talking to atheists about God. It is so much fun.
The discussion usually starts like this:
Them: “So, Cristian, you say you believe in God? You believe there is an old man up in the sky with a notepad constantly writing down what you do right or wrong and listening to prayers all the time?”
Me: “Well, yes and no. Yes, I do believe in God, but I don’t think He is an old man in the sky. I have a good internet connection, and I know that the planet is not flat and that there is a whole infinite universe out there beyond our sky. And about the writing down part, I do believe that there is something or someone out there keeping count of our words and actions. Have you heard about karma? Whatever you put out comes back to you with interest.”
Them: “Well, I don’t believe in God. I believe in the Big Bang theory, Darwin’s evolution, and science. Facts, Cristian, solid facts.”
Me: “Darwin believed in God, right? Let us start there. The Big Bang theory states that nothing exploded into something. Nothing can not exist. The definition of nothing is that it does not exist. For nothing to exist it would need something to validate it. Something or someone self-conscious to say I am something and that is nothing because nothing, while not existing, can not validate itself. The Bible says God is the Alfa and the Omega, the One without a beginning or an end. “I Am” is my name, He says to Moses in Exodus 3:14. And science, good sir, studies what already is. Science does not reinvent the universe; it merely tries to keep up with it, never truly knowing how much it understands from what it actually is.”
Them: “Well, I still don’t believe. I am the captain of my ship and the master of my soul.”
Me: “Easy to say. God made the universe, this planet, and everything in it, including you, while you had nothing to do with that, and in all that complex equation, you boldly say you are the captain of your ship and the master of your soul? We live in a universe where a mosquito bite could kill you. No more ship, no more master. The end.”
With love, yours truly, Cristian.
