There is a famous Japanese proverb that goes like this: “Not knowing is Buddha”. Which we could interpret as ignorance is bliss.
I’ve been struggling with this saying for quite some time because I, personally, don’t believe that ignorance is bliss. I like to learn new things. I’m constantly curious. I’m fascinated by God, life, nature, and the universe.
Then, I came across a famous quote by Socrates.
“The more I learn, the less I realize I know.”
When I combined the two sayings, I was inclined to derive the following:
~ Learn as much as you can, accepting that you will still die ignorant because no matter how much you learn about everything that ever was, you will never be able to know or understand everything. Not to mention that the universe and life are constantly evolving.
The more I learn, the less I realize I know. I accept my own ignorance, and I feel blissful because that gives me the power to say I don’t know.
“Not knowing is Buddha.”
